I am asked this question a lot, so here’s my spin on the whole “blogging” phenomenon.

A “blog” is many things, and can be used for many purposes. I’ll begin by describing the things you can do with a blog, and let you decide what a blog really is, and what you can do as a blogger.

Things you can do with a blog:

A blog can be an online newsletter, or an e-magazine, where YOU are the editor in chief!

A way to create an audience for what you have to say.

A way to exercise your FREEDOM of SPEECH.

A business venture. Magazines have ads, so do blogs.

A better website. Blogs are part of what has been called “Web 2.0″, where blog sites should eventually replace traditional websites.

Software which allows you to syndicate your content to 3rd parties. This is done with RSS feeds.

A way to share your ideas with the world.

What do you think a blog is?

This past week I’ve been helping one of my clients with an email marketing campaign. Email is a great way to market to your existing customer base. It allows you to send a simple message to remind your customers that you’re still around, and that you appreciate their business. The basic requirements to market via email is, of course, “the list”, and a good software package to do the heavy lifting. Sure, you could use Microsoft Outlook if you’re just sending a simple email to a couple hundred people from your contact list, but what if you have several thousand email addresses? Your PC would probably choke on that many.

First, get your list ready for import. You’ll have to extract your customer list from your order database. Hopefully you have access to it, or you know someone who does. Then get it into a spreadsheet. The data fields you’ll need are: First Name, Middle Name, Last Name, and Email. I also recommend including the Customer ID if you have that field in your database. If you are including the Customer ID in your list, you’ll want to rename this field to Foreign Key. This lets your software know that this is a unique record.

Next, you’ll need a good email marketing software package to import your list into. After a little searching online, I came across a superior solution. It’s a program called PHPList. This is not Windows software you can simply download and install on your PC. It is actually for use on a web server. This is very cool, since you can do everything you need remotely, just using a web browser.

As a strategic move to generate more name recognition and visibility, Tracy Performance Enterprises of Roseville, Michigan has launced an eBay Store to sell many of it’s rare Corvette parts, automotive accessories and memorabilia. (Seen here: http://stores.ebay.com/Tracy-Performance-Corvette-Parts/)

When it comes to promoting your online business, eBay is a fast, cheap, and easy option to get your name and products out there to the masses. It takes many months to get your website ranked well in search engines such as Google or Yahoo. However, it takes minutes to get setup on eBay to sell your products. Listing insertion fees are cheaper than the regular auction listings, and you have the option to list your items until they sell which will save a ton of time since you won’t have to relist.

I don’t know about you, but it’s difficult to remember someones phone number, let alone an entire email address. However, with a free service called Teleflip, you don’t need to know anything beyond the phone number. Now, you can format the recipient’s email address as follows:

1112223333@teleflip.com

Needless to say, a much simpler solution.

Another great open source audio compression utility is FLAC. It can typically compress a WAV file down to about 60% of the original file size. Then, because it is a “lossless” compression algorithm, you can restore the FLAC file back to the original WAV format. Now, you might be wondering why you’d need this. The two most common uses are to save disk space and bandwidth when transfering to another computer. If you are recording podcasts, you might want to use it to archive your original recordings in FLAC format instead of WAV, in order to conserve disk space. Decompress to WAV, and you’re ready to encode to any format and bit rate you want.

Using the command line version of FLAC, you can convert a FLAC file to WAV format. Then encode to MP3 with LAME.

For example:

Decode FLAC to WAV…

> flac -d yourfile.flac yourfile.wav

Encode WAV to 128-bit MP3…

> lame -b 128 yourfile.wav yourfile.mp3
